What, when they are at home I wonder, is a sensible person? What do I mean buy ‘sensible’? I mean someone who has actually sat down and reasoned that there is indeed a good God in Heaven and Earth, despite all the lousy things that happen down here on Earth. But a sensible person of any depth can discover that, actually, God’s good grace is an ever pouring fountain — it’s just that we human beings (Christians very much included) have forgotten, over the centuries, how to receive its flow.
There are, therefore, only two kinds of people I can think of as being truly sensible; the folks who earnestly worship and serve God because they know him, and those folks who seek him with all their heart because they don’t.
